Hirata Kochō (left side) and another Onna-bugeisha (female warriors akin to samurai). Kochō, as an 18-year-old, fought on the side of the shogunate in the Boshin War. She was present at the Battle of Aizu in the fall of 1868. The photo was taken in between 1860 and 1880 [640×456]
