**Critics Consensus:** It’s hard to deny *Arthur the King*’s ability to tug at the heartstrings, although it may have been more effective if it had taken a subtler approach.

**Sample Reviews:**
This true-life tale about perseverance, compassion and second chances cuts right to the quick. While it doesn’t stray from a predictable path, the journey is rarely dull, making our travels and these characters’ travails feel worthy of the big screen. – Courtney Howard, Variety
Is all of this manipulative and cheesy? Yes, and yes. But it ultimately proves irresistible, and will be especially so for younger audience members. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
It’s fairly standard heartwarming dog fare, often treacly… but edged up with vibrant, handheld cinematography by Jacques Jouffret that gives the film a more adult, action-oriented feel. **2.5/4** – Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
The story is typical paint-by-numbers inspirational — some bids at emotion feel awfully forced. Still, Wahlberg and company manage to hold your attention, and not just because there’s a cute dog in the frame. – Beatrice Loayza, New York Times
Amid the perfunctory characters and dumbed-down dialogue, director Simon Cellan Jones and screenwriter Michael Brandt lose this race by carving out the safest path. **1.5/4** – Thomas Floyd, Washington Post
“Arthur the King” is so achingly predictable, it gives one paws — err, I mean, pause. It just doesn’t have the chops. – G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
Watching Arthur the King grab this meatball of a film in his jaws and scurry off with it is a surprisingly pleasing way to spend an hour and a half. – Noah Berlatsky, Chicago Reader
Since it’s a mashup of sports and animal movies, “Arthur the King” has loads of clichés from which to choose, and it chooses them all. **2/4** – Odie Henderson, Boston Globe
[Simon Cellan Jones] uses the dog to really tug at the audience’s heartstrings in increasingly manipulative ways, filling in emotional holes that are otherwise overlooked in the script. **C+** – Adam Graham, Detroit News
Rather than truly being inspiring or moving, Arthur The King manipulates and frustrates. – Tim Grierson, Screen International
Like Arthur himself, the results are sweet and dignified. Watch it on a flight. **C+** – Ryan Lattanzio, indieWire
The draw here should be experiencing a story, seeing characters overcoming adversity, and watching them build a bond with an adorable pupper. Yet Arthur The King demonstrates incompetence at doing all three. Only one thing to say to that: Woof. **C-** – Leigh Monson, AV Club
