Interesting release strategies coming out of Hollywood as of late.
Lionsgate is releasing a Strangers Trilogy, essentially back to back in theaters over the course of summer with the conclusion of Chapter 3 releasing in September – just in time for Halloween.
The budget for all 3 films combined shot in tandem is going to be relatively cheep (horror is cheap to make). Low risk, high reward. This is not the only film having a release strategy similar to this as Kevin Costners epic western is realeasing in 2 parts back to back in theaters this summer.
Is this studios trying to compete with streaming? Keeping interest long enough to generate more rev at the box office than streaming would? Not to mention Lionsgate is buddy buddy with Netflix so even after theatrical release this will continue its journey on Netflix. I think an eye needs to be kept on this, as it might prove to be successful and pioneer a new way of movie going.
