The first photograph taken upon (re)discovery of Machu Picchu, by archaeologist Hiram Bingham, in 1911. Can you imagine the overwhelming emotion you experience when discovering a ruined ‘lost’ city that has remained hidden and forgotten for centuries?

There were memories among local indigenous people of the site’s existence, and it looks like other European explorers might have gone up to the site already.
Bingham, anyway, is credited with bringing Machu Picchu to international and widespread global attention in 1911.
